Mary G. Walsh Writing Center Online Scheduling System

The Mary G. Walsh Writing Center uses the scheduling system WCONLINE to book sessions.

If you have a writing center account, you can sign in to make a new appointment.

If you do not have a WCONLINE account, begin by going to https://salemstate.mywconline.com/register.php

Fill out all the required fields (indicated with an *). We suggest, but do not require, that student writers use their Salem State email addresses. In the case of Writing Center tutors, however, we do require that you use your Salem State address.

Make an Appointment

Sign in to your writing center account.

  1. Choose the day and time of your choice. The current day will always appear at the very top. If your appointment is for another week, you can click on Next Week (located at the top of the page), or the calendar icon to display a new week. You can also create appointments with specific tutors. The names of tutors available for a specific date are show to the left of the schedule.
  2. Find a “white box” under your desired day/time. “White boxes” indicate available tutoring times, while “purple” and “blue” boxes indicate times that tutors are NOT available for tutoring. Click the time that’s available with your preferred tutor.
  3.

  1. After selecting your time, a new window should pop up. It will ask you a few questions about the assignment you will be working on during your appointment. Once you’ve filled out the short form, hit “Save Appointment.”
  2. Your Writing Center appointment confirmation will show up as a “yellow box” on your schedule. You will also receive an email and/or a text message confirming your appointment.
  3. If you need to cancel an appointment, click on the appointment (look for a “yellow box”) and a new window should pop up. Click “Cancel this appointment” on the new window.
  4. When it's time to join your online appointment, login to your WCONLINE account and click on the "yellow box" on your schedule.

Online or eTutoring: Which is Right for Me?

The Mary G. Walsh Writing Center offers two kinds of remote tutoring: Online and eTutoring.

Online Tutoring

Online Tutoring is as close as you can come to a having session in the Writing Center without being here in person. It includes a chat function that allows you and the writer to look at, make marks on, and chat about a document simultaneously. There are optional video and audio functions, too, like those you’d find in Skype, which allow you and the writer to have a genuine discussion.

During the session itself, the tutor will ask if it is alright for him or her to erase the text on the screen, and after erasing it will ask you to paste the document you’d like to review—provided you already have something written, onto the blank screen. You and the tutor will communicate using the chat function in the right-hand margin and the audio and video functions

eTutoring

eTutoring is asynchronus tutoring. When making your appointment (or any time before your session begins), you upload a copy of your document. The tutor spends the hour of the session reviewing your document.   Within an hour the tutor will upload a copy of your document, with their comments, to the appointment tab. You will then receive an email or text informing you that this has been done. Log into your account, and click on the appointment to open the appointment tab and download your files.

Still can't decide?

If you have any questions regarding the remote tutoring options in WCONLINE, please email Bill Coyle at wcoyle@salemstate.edu.
