SOC 305 The Black Family | Book Talks

Online research guide for SOC 305 with Prof. Tiffany Chenault

Starting out - Creating Slides and Citing

CREATING YOUR SLIDES

Create your slides in Google Slides using your Google account.  If you do not have a Google Account you can use PowerPoint.  You should be able to access Google Drive and Slides using your SSU email too.

Refer to your assignment guidelines for what needs to be included (content, length, etc.), and refer to the rubric and the class brainstorm of style advice/guidelines from Library Lab 1.

CITING

Remember to cite images that are not your own.  You can use a smaller size font below the image on the slide or where it best fits.

Quotes from your book should have “quotation marks” and will need page numbers only as you should have already included a full citation for the book on your second slide.  Audiobooks will need chapters cited instead of page numbers.  Other books quoted (for instance when you are making connections to sociological concepts learned in a class text) will need to be cited fully.

Narration & Peer Review

PREPARING VOICEOVER

Slides should not have a ton of text.  Create your script/narration – you should not just be reading info off your slides, your narration should add to that.  Your narration is part of your grade and the text of your narration (in a Word doc or PDF) will need to be posted with your video in order for it to be ADA compliant.

PEER REVIEW

There will be peer review sessions of your slides and of your videos and chances to edit prior to posting.

Creating Video

CREATING VIDEO

PLATFORMS to create your video

Create your video with voiceover added to your slides using ScreenPal (set up free account) or Apple users may want to use iMovie

Your end product should be a video of your slides with your voiceover narration in a MOV file or a MP4 file format.  You also must turn in a Google doc or Word or Pages doc transcript of your narration.

Note: It is possible another video creation tool may be usable, but we only have support available for the two platforms listed above.  If you do use a different video creation tool make sure the end product is a file type that can be uploaded to YouTube (such as MOV and MP4) and that you can complete the assignment (meeting the requirements) successfully on your own.

MICROPHONE

Some built in computer microphones will be strong enough.  Earbuds/headphones with microphone capability can also be used as a microphone.  A microphone is on reserve at the library’s Help Desk for anyone who needs this technology and who wants to record in a group study room.
