SOC 305 The Black Family | Book Talks

Online research guide for SOC 305 with Prof. Tiffany Chenault

Guiding Questions & Learning Objectives

Guiding Questions:

  • How do sociological themes learned in my coursework tie into the real or fictional life experiences told in the popular book I read?
  • How can I convince others to read this book and share those connections to sociological thinking via a book talk?

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore the story (characters, plot, and theme) of a popular fiction or nonfiction title relating to a Black family and/or the situation of Black families.
  • Engage critical thinking skills to better understand sociological themes and how they tie into real or fictional life experiences you read about.
  • Write and present persuasively as a book talk is developed for the book you read.
  • Communicate meaning of the story and its connections to sociological thinking through the creation of a digital presentation (book talk) and make recommendations to others.
  • Participate in a constructive instructor and peer review editing process.
  • Improve visual literacy skills through the creation of slides and video and the proper use of images, in order to convey information in a persuasive and meaningful way.
