Student Engagement, Research and Instruction

Let's Collaborate!

As a research and instruction librarian I am guided by my leading professional organization's information literacy frameworks (see About page).

To become information literate scholars, citizens and workers, students need repeated practice in applying research and critical thinking skills to assignments throughout their Salem State experience.

I am happy to collaborate on assignment design, single or multiple class sessions, semester long library labs, the creation of supporting online research guides, and workshops.

Integrating Info Lit can:

Reduce student research anxiety

Reduce plagiarism

Improve quality of student work

Foster life-long critical thinking skills students will use as citizens of the world and in the workforce of their chosen field

Employers responding to the National Association of Colleges and Employers' 2014 "Job Outlook Survey" expect "candidates to be patient and persistent researchers able to retrieve information in a variety of formats."  However, most employers said their recent college graduate hires lack deeper more traditional skills in research and analysis "instead, ...default to quick answers plucked from the internet..." often superficial and incomplete.  Chronicle of Higher Education, July 2014

A Stanford University 2016 report "shows a dismaying inability by students to reason about information they see on the internet."  Findings indicate that "Despite their fluency with social media, many students are unaware of basic conventions for indicating verified digital information."  Stanford News Center, November 2016
