Nursing 104: Background Information

NURSING SENSITIVE INDICATORS

What are Nursing Sensitive Indicators?

Nursing-Sensitive Indicators (NSIs) are measures and indicators that reflect the structure, processes and outcomes of nursing care (American Nurses Association, 2004). These measures reflect the impact of nursing care. They are important to measure because as a profession, nursing has a responsibility to measure, evaluate, and improve the quality of nursing practice.

We will look at an outcome indicator which reflects outcomes that depend on the quantity or quality of nursing care. An example is pressure ulcers.
