Each year the campus celebrates Earth Day with a week-long series of events. Departments as diverse as Biology, Political Science, Philosophy, Communications, Geography, and Art participate, as do local environmental organizations. Activities run the gamut of art exhibits, panel discussions, lectures, clean-ups and tours. Friend of the Earth Awards are given each year to environmental activists who inspire students. For the past ten years the Library has also participated through the work of one librarian who has served on the Planning Committee, created a Libguide and book displays, compiled lists of environmental films to screen and purchased DVD’s. She has taught environmental research sessions, coordinated an environmental internship and job fair, and judged the annual environmental research poster competition. The Library has also sponsored film showings and hosts student Earth Days art work.
Over the the years hundreds of students have undertaken research on environmental issues, had their consciousness raised, and found their voice as activists through participating in the events.
The successful effort to divest the university of fossil fuel investments grew out of efforts by members of the Planning Committee.
Lasting relationships have been established between the campus community and local environmental organizations.
The Library has raised its visibility on campus, forged closer ties with faculty involved in the events, and strengthened its collections in environmental studies across the disciplines.
