Nursing: Background Information on Your Nursing Topic

This guide is designed to help Salem State University's nursing faculty and students find journal articles on nursing topics.

Off-Campus Access to Library Resources

Off-Campus Access to Library Resources:
Use your Salem State network/wireless network (also known as Windows/SSCAD and VPN) user name and password to log into library databases (such as CINAHL), periodicals, and ebooks from home. All resources are available through the library's web page:  http://www.salemstate.edu/library

Don't know your user name and password?
Students - please see IT's page for: Student Password Reset.
Faculty/Staff - log into Navigator for your user name and password.

Note: All password resets may be done on and off-campus and do not require access to the Salem State wireless network.

Background Information on Your Search Topic

Get some background information on your topic! Use encyclopedias, textbooks, good quality web pages, handbooks, books, review articles, to find out about any topic which you may not be familiar with.

Some great places to look:

Centers for Disease Control - lots of health data and statistics, plus information on a variety of health care issues/diseases/disorders.
Google
- search the web for pages on your topic.
Library Catalog - locate books, reference books on medical topics in our (and local) libraries.
MedlinePlus - includes dictionaries, encyclopedias, links to medical information on diseases/disorders.
Merck Manual - online and print reference book on human diseases and disorders.
New York Times Health - includes patient interviews, high quality articles on medical topics.

Tip:
When using web pages for background information, please look at the page critically. The web is full of pages that are good - and bad! See the following web pages for some guidelines on evaluation of web pages:
