The difference between popular and scholarly articles: what it means, and what it looks like

Popular Scholarly
Published in magazines and newspapers Published in scholarly journals
Written by journalists Written by scholars and researchers; common to have multiple authors credited with one article
Intended for a general audience Intended for an academic audience (scholars and students)
Written in a way that is easy to understand Written with the assumption of the reader's familiarity with technical language/jargon
A good place to find background information on a topic, in-depth investigation of a topic, summaries of research, and coverage of current events The place to find original research that is being introduced to the world for the first time, almost always on very narrowly focused subjects
Usually do not include an abstract (summary) Almost always prefaced by an abstract, which is a brief summary of the article, usually written by the author(s)
No references: there may be mentions of published research or even other journalism, but without formal citations References: in-text citations, footnotes, or endnotes. These can be a great place to identify more sources!
High emphasis on visual appeal in popular sources: color photos, pleasing design Lower emphasis on visual appeal in academic sources: even black and white photos are rare (usually present only when directly discussed in the text)
Advertising is ubiquitous in most newspapers and magazines Little to no advertising in scholarly journals
Subscription postcards may be present in magazines Subscription postcards are unlikely to be found in scholarly journals

  • "Trying to Find a Cry of Desperation Amid the Facebook Drama"

  • "Seeing Everyone Else's Highlight Reels: How Facebook Usage is Linked to Depressive Symptoms"
  • "Facebook Use Between College Resident Advisors and Their Residents: A Mixed Methods Approach"
  • "Elevated Romantic Love and Jealousy if Relationship Status Is Declared on Facebook"
