Dear Nancy,

Congratulations! On behalf of the ACRL Value of Academic Libraries Committee, I am delighted to inform you that your institution has been selected to participate in the new ACRL program “Assessment in Action: Academic Libraries and Student Success,” made possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. We have selected 75 institutional teams from a pool of 98 applicants. The quality of your team’s project goals and your personal goals as the team leader in conjunction with evidence of strong institutional support distinguished your application. Please read through this entire letter and note that there are tasks for you to complete with very short deadlines.

The facilitators for Assessment in Action (AiA) welcome you to the inaugural year of this program. An important component of the AiA program is to establish a learning community where librarians have the freedom to connect, risk, and learn together. You are joining a special group of individuals who are strongly committed to establishing an environment which supports collective learning, shared competence, sustained interaction, and a climate of mutuality and trust.

As a librarian team leader in this 14-month long experience, you are the only member of your team receiving this notification. While you may share the good news internally, with your team mates and library colleagues, we ask that you do not blog, tweet or otherwise share this publicly until noon Central on Tuesday, April 9, when we will issue a public announcement via the ACRLInsider blog. We are still informing applicants of their status and need time to complete that process.

Additionally, we ask you to confirm that you understand the expectations of being a librarian team leader and accept all the responsibilities listed below. Please indicate your agreement, no later than 4pm Central, Monday April 8, via the form at:https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/J953HTR.

AS A LIBRARIAN TEAM LEADER IN THE AiA LEARNING COMMUNITY, I UNDERSTAND THAT:

1.       Being part of the AiA learning community is a continuous year-round commitment, with approximately 2-5 hours per week anticipated.

2.       I will serve as the main point of contact for my team for the duration of the program and will communicate program expectations with team mates as necessary.

3.       I agree to do the reading and writing that will be requested of me and meet the deadlines provided.

4.       I will dedicate myself to engaging with other librarian team leaders and actively contribute to a community of practice by providing peer-to-peer collegial support.

5.       I will facilitate my campus team in completing an action learning project.

6.       I will submit a final project report at the conclusion of the program.

7.       I will prepare and deliver a poster describing my team's project and our learning.

8.       I understand that, while the bulk of the support for the AiA learning community will take place virtually through an online asynchronous classroom and webcasts, I am expected to attend three in person events as follows:

a.       Thursday, June 27, 2013, 1pm-5pm, and Friday, June 28, 2013, 8:30am-12:30pm: Chicago, IL.

b.      During January 24-28, 2014: Philadelphia, PA. Full day, date TBD.

c.       June 26-July 1, 2014: Las Vegas, NV., poster session (two slots to choose from, TBD).

9.       I will secure funding to travel to these in person events.

COMMUNICATION

Our primary communication tool will be a Moodle course for AiA librarian team leaders and facilitators. This course is not open to all team members, just you as the librarian team leader. Readings, exercises, and information on the webinars and in person events are all on the site. Here is how you can access the Moodle course:

  1. Go to ALA’s Moodle site at http://classes.ala.org/
  2. Click the “Login” link at the upper right.
    1. If you have previously used ALA’s Moodle site, log in to your account using your existing personal username and password. If you can’t remember your username or password, use the “Forgotten your username or password?” function on the login page for assistance.
    2. If you have not used ALA’s Moodle site before, follow the instructions on the right side of the login page to create a new account.

                                                               i.      Note that an email will be immediately sent to your email address. This email includes a confirmation link that must be clicked through to confirm your account before you will be able to access the site.

ii.      If you do not receive this confirmation email at the address you registered to your account within an hour, please contact kmalenfant@ala.org so your account can be confirmed manually.

  1. Once you have logged in or created a new account and logged in, click the “Association of College and Research Libraries” link.  Then select the course: Assessment in Action - 2013-2014.  When prompted for an “enrollment key,” enter: AiA2013
  2. Voila! You're in. From now on you will only need to enter your personal username and password to log in and access the AiA course.

FIRST WEBCAST

The kick-off webcast from 1:00 – 2:30pm Central on Thursday, April 18, will be particularly useful for asking questions and seeking clarification about the AiA program. There will be one login per institution, and you should arrange that your team mates congregate in the same room and participate together. Details on how to access the webcast and how to prepare for it are in the Moodle course.

AiA EVENTS AT ACRL 2013 CONFERENCE

If you are travelling to Indianapolis next week for the ACRL 2013 conference, we invite you to join us at these three events:

Assessment in Action Meet & Greet

Friday, April 12, 2013

2:45 – 3:45 p.m.

JW Marriott, Lobby Bar

No host (i.e. pay on your own)

This is an informal opportunity to meet other AiA librarian team leaders, facilitators, and ACRL leaders. Feel free to drop on by, buy yourself a drink, and say “hi.” We’re excited to meet you in person!

Assessment in Action Focus Group

Thursday, April 11, 2013

9 – 10:30 a.m.

Light refreshment served

We have asked Melanie Hawks, a librarian and facilitator extraordinaire (who is not affiliated with the AiA program) to meet with several librarian team leaders from a diverse range of institution types. The purpose is to better understand your perceptions as you prepare to embark on the AiA program. She will write up the results and share them with the AiA facilitators so that we can better support you as we continue to design the program. The results will also help inform our final program evaluation report to IMLS. You may RSVP for this via the agreement form, and we’ll share the room location if your participation is needed.

Update on Value of Academic Libraries Initiative

Friday, April 12, 2013

1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

JW Marriott, Grand Ballroom 9-10

Learn about the latest with ACRL’s VAL initiative, including the IMLS-funded project “Assessment in Action: Academic Libraries and Student Success.” Find out which 75 institutional teams, led by librarians, will be developing and implementing action-learning projects that examine the impact of the library on students. Learn more about the program and consider how a collaborative approach, with a campus team led by a librarian, could yield more powerful results for you.

Again, we ask that you indicate your acceptance of all the responsibilities by completing the agreement form at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/J953HTR no later than 4pm Central, Monday April 8. If for some reason your institution is no longer able to participate in the AiA program, please contact me immediately by e-mail, kmalenfant@ala.org or 800-545-2433, ext. 2510.

Please accept my congratulations on your successful application! We look forward to your participation at the AiA Program.

Sincerely,
Kara
