This page lists and describes periodical databases available for biology research at the Salem State University Library.

All of these are highly regarded titles for which the Library holds a subscription.

Every database can be accessed directly by clicking on its title.

If you access a title from off-campus, you will be prompted to enter a username and password. This is to validate your standing in the SSU community.

The correct username/password are the same as those used for SSU email and Navigator.

Selected Databases in Related Disciplines

GeoRef and GeoRef in Process
Produced by the American Geosciences Institute, GeoRef indexes some 3,500 journals in addition to books, maps, government reports, conference papers, theses, and dissertations.

The GeoRef in Process subsection alerts readers to the most recent geological literature before it is entered into the main GeoRef database.

GreenFILE (via EBSCOHost)
The multidisciplinary GreenFILE draws upon the literature of agriculture, education. law, health, and technology.
PsycARTICLES
Companion to PyscINDEX. Provides full-text of over 90 journals from basic/experimental psychology, clinical psychology, developmental psychology, education and school psychology, health psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, social psychology and social processes
PsycINFO
Covers animal behavior and neurobiology, and other topics of interest to biology researchers.
SciFinder
SciFinder requires users to create an account before searching.

SciFinder covers not only traditional areas of chemistry, but also related aspects in astronomy, physics, biology, mathematics, etc.

SciFinder has seven components, each relating to a different type of chemical information. "CAS Content at a Glance" (http://www.cas.org/content/at-a-glance) provides details.

SciFinder is an excellent source for new research. It publishes author and abstract information within 8 days of receiving new articles.

SciFinder is not 100% full-text. Researchers will be linked to the Periodical Directory (http://ud8jn6tu6b.search.serialssolutions.com/) to see if another Salem State database contains the journal containing the article he/she would like to read.

Major Biology Research Databases

BIOSIS Citation Index (via Web of Science)
"BIOSIS Citation Index provides seamless searching of nearly 5,000 journal titles and 20 million records in the life sciences field, as well as 165,000 documents from more than 1,500 meetings, with coverage dating back to 1926."

To begin searching, select "BIOSIS" from the drop-down menu next to the "All Databases" icon.
Medline (via EBSCO)
Medline is the bibliographical database of the National Library of Medicine. Is the premier source for articles on all aspects of medicine, health care, and related fields.
Medline (via Web of Science)
Medline, the bibliographical database of the National Library of Medicine, is now available through Web of Science. This enables users to take advantage of the Web of Science's powerful, advanced searching features.

To begin searching, select "Medline" from the drop-down menu next to the "All Databases" icon.
PubMed
PubMed is available on the web.

PubMed includes Medline and other speciality databases. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, it provides access to articles from over 5600 journals. In addition, PubMed cites articles as soon as they appear on a journals web site, in advance of the official publication date.

For the most part, PubMed is full-text. For articles that do not appear in the full-text, consult the Periodical Directory (http://ud8jn6tu6b.search.serialssolutions.com/) to see if another Salem State database contains the journal containing the article he/she would like to read.
SciELO Citation Index (via Web of Science)
SciELO, the Scientific Electronic Library Online, is a scholarly, open access portal to scientific literature outside the United States. Being available on the Web of Science platform enables users to take advantage of the advanced searching capabilities of the database.

The Library's subscription to SciELO focuses on biology, covering literature in the following disciplines: biology, zoology, agronomy, and plant sciences.

Citations appear in the original language of publication. Some are in English; most are not.

To begin searching, select "SciELO Citation Index" from the drop-down menu next to the "All Databases" icon.
Science Citation Index (via Web of Science)
The Science Citation Index is a journal article database that provides bibliographic data, indexing terms, abstracts, and related data. Of particular note are the "Cited Reference Searching" and "Cited By" features, which enable researchers to follow the history of references to an article.

Though Science Citation Index does not focus specifically on biology, it covers many prominent biology journals. It also provides access to the content of articles about biological topics from related disciplines.

To begin searching, select "Web of Science Core Collection" from the drop-down menu next to the "All Databases" icon.

Limit searching to Science Citation Index by clicking on the drop down menu "More Settings" on the search page, and de-selecting all databases but Science Citation Index.
Zoological Abstracts (via Web of Science)
"Zoological Record® is the world's oldest continuing database of animal biology. It is considered the world's leading taxonomic reference, and with coverage back to 1864, has long acted as the world's unofficial register of animal names. The broad scope of coverage ranges from biodiversity and the environment to taxonomy and veterinary sciences."

To begin searching, select "Zoological Abstracts" from the drop-down menu next to the "All Databases" icon.

Additional Significant Science Databases

Academic Search Premier (via EBSCO)
Due to its interdisciplinary nature, Academic Search Premier can be helpful in finding articles on biology topics that involve other disciplines, and technological applications of biology.

The following databases cover a fair proportion of biology journals, in addition to journals from other scientific fields.

By covering journals in other fields, they enable students to research cross-disciplinary biological topics.

JSTOR
JSTOR is a digital archive of more than 1,500 leading journals in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Provides the entire back run of included journals up to an "embargo period" - usually within the past three - five years. For many of embargoed science titles, JSTOR authorizes access to full-text on association home pages.
OVID
OVID covers scientific and medical research, providing both full-text and bibliographic citations.
ScienceDirect
ScienceDirect is a database of articles from Elsevier Publishing. Some 2500 journal titles are included, many of which are full-text. A high percentage of articles in ScienceDirect are full-text.

SpringerLink
Wiley Online Library
Wiley covers 1,500 journal and 14,000 books in the life, health and physical sciences; social sciences; and the humanities. Many of Wiley articles are not full-text for Salem State. For these articles, consult the Periodical Directory (http://ud8jn6tu6b.search.serialssolutions.com/) to see if another Salem State database contains the journal containing the article he/she would like to read.
